Carving Tips For The Perfect Pumpkin!

We have all been there- the kids are riled up, and excited to begin carving their pumpkins, but the tough pumpkin skin is not cooperating! Not having the correct tools or knowledge to carve a good pumpkin can take away from the carving experience. Never sacrifice fun for a good jack-o-lantern! Here are a few recommendations to make the carving process much easier!

  • Always use a serrated knife to cut the hole in the pumpkin that you will use to scrape out the seeds. It will travel through the skin much easier!
  • Instead of cutting a hole in the top of your pumpkin, cut a hole in the bottom! This will allow you to level out your pumpkin if it is misshapen, or has any bumps on the bottom.
  • Cutting a hole in the bottom of your pumpkin will make it much simpler to light up your jack-o-lantern! No more lowering down a candle, worrying about burning yourself! Simply set the candle on the ground, and lower the pumpkin onto the top of it!
  • Use an ice cream scoop to get rid of the seeds!
  • When you begin to design your pumpkin, select a small, paring knife! Additionally, you can purchase a pumpkin carving kit, which will likely come with all of the knives you will need.
  • Use a battery operated carving knife for designs that require elaborate detail!
  • Spread petroleum jelly inside your pumpkin to keep it from drying out! This will also help to keep mold away!
  • Find a battery operated tea light so that you do not have to worry about your pumpkin as a potential fire hazard!
